Update: Hackers retaliate after Megavideo site is taken down

Hacker group Anonymous has retaliated to the news that site MegaUpload – responsible for popular student haunt Megavideo – has been removed from the internet ahead of a US vote on SOPA: new laws against internet piracy.

On Thursday the American Department of Justice announced that it had taken Megaupload offline, as well as arresting at least four of its members under the charge of piracy.
The site, which is based in Hong Kong, was used to 50 million daily hits and boasted 150 million users worldwide. Not only was it popular among students as a host site for many American tv shows, it was also endorsed by a number of American celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys and Kanye West.

Megavideo has always been quick to take down any videos reported as pirated and has been dilligent in keeping track of posts in case of copyright infringments.
However, news of the Department of Justice’s action against the site was not taken well by users who, under the guise of internet libertines Anonymous, took revenge against several websites.

A statement, linked to @AnonymousWiki twitter account, said that “We Anonymous are launching our largest attack ever on government and music industry sites. Lulz. The FBI didn’t think they would get away with this did they? They should have expected us.”

It has been reported that, overnight, ten sites were attacked by the Anonymous group, including the Department of Justice, the FBI, Universal Music, RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and Hadopi – the French government agency responsible for “protecting creative works on the internet”.

The outcome of the lawsuit brought against Megaupload founders is yet to be seen, but the general reaction to the story is evident. The internet, students included, are not happy about this step towards bringing in SOPA, the hash tag #bringbackmegaupload trending worldwide last night.
